Barneys New York is the “go-to” place for high end niche beauty products. One of my favorite places to visit is the fragrance bar. Stocked with hard to find and exclusive scents, Barneys New York offers an array of wonderfully well blended exotic selections. If you tire of the same standard scents you find in most department stores, I suggest you give Barneys New York a try.

My favorites include Serge Lutens Daim Blond and Nana De Bary Pink & Bronze perfumes.

Uber designer Chris Benz has collaborated with Lancôme for several seasons to bring limited edition beauty products that makeup aficionados covet. For spring 2011, the inspiration behind the collection was French pop chanteuse France Gall. The lilac hued collection consists of Color Design Minerale Eye Shadow Quad in Cool Lavande, Le Crayon Khol in Ultra-Lavande, L’Absolu Rouge lipstick in Lily Rose and the creamy pastel LeVernis nail polish in Violet Groove.

Spring 2011 Makeup Trend: The Orange Lip

After seasons of the red lip trend, shades of orange are leading the pack as the next “big thing” in the world of beauty. A surprisingly universal color, orange is a very interesting color for lips. Not to be literal, this trend can be easily translated into a very wearable real look. Look for sheer textures that pack a bit more color or try an orange or coral gloss. Like red, orange lips look beautiful with bronzed skin and work well with a clean, well defined eye.

Lela Rose: Stila Longwear Lip Color mixed in Outrageous and Lover (a red and an orange), finished with a blotting of orange eye shadow for a matte finish.

Shiseido is really stepping up their makeup game. Tom Pecheux was the creative makeup director for the line before he went to Estee Lauder. It seems that his influence has rubbed off on the company because their colors seem to be getting better and better each year.

Reminiscent of fall’s Denim & Rose palette, the Peony & Python palette contains a beautiful assortment of cool lilacs, silvers, indigo and violet. This would be an excellent palette for all skin tones.

When you mention the word “oil” to most people in terms of skin care, they shriek with horror. The very word will send people into convulsions. I, frankly, don’t know where and why oil got such a bad rap for so long, but oil can be your best friend. It just depends on which kind you use and for what purpose.

For dry skin, oil can be a “god send,” especially in cooler months when skin can become very tight producing little to no oil. Great oils for dry skin include Almond, carrot seed, cedarwood, clary, jasmine, geranium, lavender, orange, Palma rose, neroli, castor, extra virgin, wheat germ, sandalwood, rosewood, rose, Vetiver, and Ylang-ylang.

Those with oilier skin really tend to stir clear of any and all oil, but cleansing or moisturizing with oil can have some amazing effects on oily skin and can help clear up any breakouts that is characteristic of oily skin. It sounds weird, but oil can breakdown oil. Staying away from mineral oils, some of the better options for oilier skins are cedarwood, geranium, Clary, lavender, Ylang-ylang, lemon, peppermint, Niaouli, Cajeput, cypress, frankincense, patchouli, Roman & German chamos, sandalwood, juniper, Melisa, coriander, lime (distilled), grapefruit,rose, rosemary, eucalyptus, red mandarine, myrtle, and/or neroli.

For combination or sensitive skin, combination skin can use geranium, rosewood, Ylang-ylang, rose geranium hydrosol, neroli hydrosol and “ever so” sensitive skin can use oils like Roman & German chamomile, rose, Palma Rosa, Helichrysum, neroli, rosewood, carrot, angelica, jasmine, Neroli, Chamomile or Yarrow Hydrosols.

For those lucky enough to have normal skin can use Atlas cedarwood, geranium, jasmine, lavender, soy, neroli, evening primrose, almond, orange, geranium, palmarosa, roman chamo, rose, rosewood, Ylang-ylang, and/or tea tree.

Some good facial oil products for combination/oily skin, try Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil. This product will purify and rebalance skin. This contains essential oils of rosewood, geranium and lotus extract.

Suitable for all skin types, Artistry Moisture Plus contains Safflower Seed Oil, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Shea Butter Oil, and Macadamia Olive Fruit Oil . This is a lightweight oil that is gives your skin a boost of oil where it's needed the most.

Rodin Olio Lusso uses eleven essential oils (Jasmine, Sweet Almond, Apricot, Jojoba, Evening of Primrose, Rose Hip Seed, Arnica, Calendula, Neroli, Sunflower, and Argan) to make skin smooth and supple and very soft. Also, comes in a body oil.

Josie Maran 100% Organic Argan Oil is a good daily moisturizer. Argan Oil is the “gold of Morocco” because it has a high concentration of vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Argan Oil is very versatile and can be used for a lot of skin conditions, too.

Lastly, for those with very dry skin, Bobbi Brown’s EXTRA Facial Oil provides intense hydration. EXTRA Facial Oil contains Sesame, Sweet Almond, Olive and Jojoba oil and contains essential oils of Neroli, Patchouli, Lavender and Sandalwood.

Fall 2010 Makeup Looks At Pamella Roland

Laura Mercier is one of my favorite makeup artists and makeup lines. I was a freelancer for the line for years. I love how Laura makes a woman feel feminine and powerful. I was so excited to see Laura at the tents for NYFW.

The makeup looks at Pamella Roland did not disappoint. Laura’s team of makeup artist created very wearable looks for the “Venetian-inspired” fashions created by Pamella Roland.

Here what Laura Mercier products were used:

The lips were the standout feature. The lips were treated to Very Cherry Lip Liner & Bing Cherry Lipstick (Laura's current favorite shade and available online only). Bing Cherry is a perfect shade for fall, as it's not overly bright or red. Plum Noir Lip Glaze was blended with the Bing Cherry to create a deeper, blood shade.

For the eyes, a blue-gray and a sea green shade was applied and finished with Black Caviar Eye Liner up to the lash line for a soft, sheer, clouded look. For the cheeks, Wild Bouquet was used to create, a very neutral blush to complete the entire look.

The inspiration behind the Armani Privé Fall 2010 Couture collection was definitely the 70’s with the gold/amber smoked eyes, nude frosted (mildly) lip and the bouncy cover girl hair reminiscent of Studio 54.

To get the look, makeup artist extraordinaire, Linda Cantello used several Giorgio Armani beauty products to achieve the looks above.

Giorgio Armani Maestro Eye Shadow Quad in 03 Earth and Maestro Eye Shadow in No. 3 and No. 18.

To achieve the look, Cantello dipped a wet brush into the Maestro Eye Shadow No. 3 (goldy amber)and swept the color all over the lids. She used the Maestro Eye Shadow No. 18 (charcoal) on the outer corners and Armani Fluid Sheer No. 2 Shimmering Beige (not shown) on the lips and as a highlighted down the nose and cheeks.

Lip pencils were made, primarily, to hold your lipstick in place to keep it from feathering into the small lines around the mouth. Now, lip pencils are used in a multitude of ways, so you can do a lot with a little. Laura Mercier has revamped her collection of lip pencils to include six new colors, plus an “anti-feather” that’s clear to hold your lip color in place without changing the color of your lipstick. Great product for color purists!

Things you can do with lip liner:

1. Line and fill lips with the lip pencil. Apply your favorite color on top of the lip pencil for longer lasting color.

When looking at the collection sent down the runway at YSL for Fall 2010, it was obvious that the clothing worn by nuns was a inspiration for designer Stefano Pilati. But the makeup and hair was more interesting. Very lady-like, the makeup was described as "poetic" by makeup artist, Dick Page (one of my favs). The eyes were shaded in a matte fuchsia shadow and toned down with a gray shadow. The eyes were lined with a creamy black liner but an indigo powder was traced over the black liner to make the look a bit more sweet and soft. The lips were treated to a beautiful fuchsia lipstick with a bit of a gray undertone.

Makeup genius, Pat McGrath, created a very fresh makeup look for Miu Miu during Paris Fashion Week. Taking a cue from the sixties, Ms. McGrath used shades of orange and purple to bring a fresh vibe to the face against an otherwise minimalist, but feminine collection of Miu Miu's fall offerings. I love sleek or messy ponytails. I think they look effortlessly chic and sexy! That's why I fell in love with the ponytails at the Fall 2010 runway show at Cynthia Rowley! The hair was described as a sleek, natural ponytail accented with the striking contrast of an artificial colored hair extension placed off center for an added tuft of textured fringe.

Backstage at the shows this week, there seemed to be a trend from what I've been reading that beauty for Fall 2010 will be the season of the "anti-blush." Quite a shock for someone who wears blush, like me.

For some makeup artists, the cheek will be about the "cheekbone." Bringing out the cheekbones will involve bringing luminousity to the skin with products that highlight and shape that area of the face.

At Rodarte, my favorite MUA, Charlotte Tilbury, mentioned that she was over the "rosy" cheek, while my other favorite MUA, Dick Page, was asked about the "anti-blush" movement for fall.

As he provided a "healthy" cheek to the models at the Marc by Marc Jacobs show, he kindly gave his reply, "F*** that."

My sentiments exactly.

NYFW F/W 2010: Backstage Beauty At Donna Karan

I haven't worn red lips in so long, but for the last three fashion seasons or more, more than one or two designers feature red lips in some form or another. From juicy tangerine-orangy reds to deep cranberry to warm deep brick crimson, reds will definitely be the key "accessory" to wear for the coming fall. I'm talking full-on lips--not the wimpy sheer variety.

Red lips, deep very cherry lips were evident at the Fall 2010 Donna Karan Show for New York Fashion Week. One of my makeup mentors, Charlotte Tibury, shaped the lips with MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry and she used MAC Lip Mix in Burgundy to fill in the lip and then she topped off the look with a lip lacquer, like Nars Diablo.

With a swipe of a grayish steel blue eye shadow swept from the lower lash to the brow, note the clean and "waxy" texture of the skin. Be on the lookout for MAC Mixing Medium (coming summer 2010). Charlotte mixed this product with the foundation to give the skin a flawlessly mannequin, but realistic dewy texture.

From what I've read, model turned fashion designer, Erin Wasson's presentation during New York Fashion week harkened back to the nineties grunge look with her showing of slouthy tees and leggings. It was the beauty looks, I found interesting. Love the look of the soft nudy-mauve lip and lightly smoked eyes in shades of grey and the healthy cheek, but the one bushy "Frankenstein-esque" eyebrow feels forced. It's like someone wanted a look that would standout, but I think they missed the mark. Didn't see how this translated to a grunge-inspired, 70's vibe beauty look.

For the last three or four fashion seasons and maybe a little before that, fashion insiders have made the proclamation that "lipstick is back!" I would say that within the last eight or nine years, sales of lipstick have gone down and the sale of lip gloss had exploded exponentially.

Seeing this trend, the style mavens at Chanel have decided to take all lip gloss users and convert them into lipstick lovers! Especially among the younger set, lip gloss is "QUEEN," so to speak. They grew up seeing lipstick as something that's worn by an older crowd. Chanel will singlehandedly, take all those Glossimer users and introduce to them the new Coco Rouge lipsticks that have a completely different more up-to-date texture and a wider range of shades of pinks, nudes, and berries.

Any one of my friends can tell you that not only do I love makeup, I'm all about hair care. My stylist is a bit like me in that she is always seeking products that will make your hair better and she believes, like me, in great hair care products. About a year ago, she introduced me to Shu Uemura's Art of Hair Collection. Because my hair is relaxed, combating dryness is critical to the health of my hair. She used the Silk Bloom treatment on my hair and because it contains Argon Oil, I knew it had to be something special to it. Just like Moroccan Oil, the Silk Bloom conditioner worked wonders for my hair. It stayed hydrated for two straight weeks and I was able to maintain my hair style until my next visit.

I typically wear my hair in a straight bob. To achieve my look, I use one of the best flat irons on the market, ghd! It doesn't burn my hair because of the ceramic plates and I add moisture and protect it with the "oil of the gods," Moroccan Oil! Last night's Grammy Awards didn't disappoint in the style and beauty department. There seemed to be a running theme concerning the makeup on these lovely celebs. Take a close look and you'll see that there are variations of the "smoky eye," but the use of lighter shadows to bring luminosity to the eyes stand out the most.

I love the "icy smoky eye" on Rihanna! A smoky eye doesn't have to be literal. On Rihanna, shades of pale white and, perhaps, a light shimmery gray were used to achieve this look. The pale shimmery white was used as a highlight on the upper and lower eye, while a very "tight" eye line of a black liner gel and spiky lashes anchored this very doable eye. To compliment her Elie Saab number, Rihanna's creamy skin and pinky lips and sheer pink cheek, were definitely a home run with this makeup!

Jennifer Hudson was a stunner as well dress in head-to-toe black. The new mommy looked great in one of spring 2010's trendy 'do -- a sleek pony tail complimented with a fringe bang. Like Rihanna, Jennifer's beautiful eyes were done in a pale shimmery beige with the outer eyes lined with black eyeliner and contoured with a black shadow. Her sheerly sweet shaded coral cheeks and nude lip balanced her look.

Beyonce looked like a modern day Egyptian Goddess in her Stephane Rolland pinky nude dress! The bold gold jewelry looked as if it were unearthed just for the special occasion! Beyonce's smoky eyes and brows take center stage with a bold stoke of black shadow carefully placed on her lower lid gradually taking on a "winged" effect. With the darker brow a stark contrast to her golden tresses with threads of metallic gold strands, the streak of pale gold shadow under the lower lashes, keeps this makeup from looking too severe. The skin was contoured with bronzer, particularly on the cheeks, forehead and chin. Her lips were a pale creamy nude to balance her "Cleopatra Eyes!"

Keri Hilson looked like an angel in this heavenly pink dress. Her smoky eyes stand out in shades of deep violet purple, black eyeliner and a smidge of shimmer in the inner corners to lighten the look. Her lips were lined in a light brown, almost the same shade as her lips and filled in with a pale pinky-peach with a sweep of a light shimmery pink gloss. Her skin was shaded with bronzer and a pink blush on the apple of the cheeks to provide a pop of color! Gorgeous!

About five or six years ago, I fell in love with a sweet line of beauty products called, Paul & Joe. I remember thinking why wasn't this line available where I lived. But when I took a trip to NYC in 2004, I saw the line in the Soho Sephora and in Bergdorf Goodman and fell even more in love. My favorite products were the lipsticks. Not only did the packaging send me over the moon because of its girlish quality, but the lipstick drenched my lips in color and moisture. The line was created by designer Sophie Albou. I'm inspired by the way the packages change to fit the mood of each fashion season. If you ever see Paul & Joe Beauté, the line is definitely worth checking out.

I've been looking at the Lipstick Queen products for a long time and I got the chance to purchase the perfect orange for my complexion! The Chinatown Glossy Pencil in Genre is a beautiful bright orange that's sheer but it packs a lot of punch without being overpowering. Perfect color to combat the winter doldrums. The texture is smooth and the gloss sits comfortably on the lips. It's a nice fat, chunky pencil that comes with its own sharpener. Worth the $20!

I love it when I come across a beauty item that's relatively obscure. At a recent visit to Anthropologie while shopping for a gift, I came across Susanne Lang fragrances. I was smitten by the small and sleek cube the fragrance was packaged in. Very contemporary and so personal. I spritzed each of the six fragrances into the air to see what I could potentially wear. The two I liked the most were the Tamboli Wood and the Cashmere. One of the sales associates said that they were great for layering, too. I plan to get the Cashmere very soon.
